If you want to build an audience, you know you should be writing and creating more.
If you want to make more money, you know you should be selling more.
You either have all the knowledge you need, or can have immediate access to that knowledge at the speed of your fingertips.
The problem isn’t knowledge, it’s resistance.
So what exactly is resistance?
It’s like a dark cloud hanging above us, preventing us from seeing the light. It’s there to ultimately stop us in becoming the best and highest versions of ourselves. And it can show up in all areas of our life.
You see, we all experience resistance everyday. Whether you want to record more YouTube videos, work on a new online product, or get out and meet new people, whatever it is you are trying to achieve that contributes to your personal growth, resistance starts to interfere.
Fighting resistance is an inner war humanity has undergone since the beginning of time. So how do you strategize against the enemy within? Here are 5 monumental steps that will help give you an advantage during your daily battles so you can pave your path to inner victory.
Resistance is a subtle but treacherous energy. If you’re not careful, It can creep up on you when you least expect it.
The main problem is that we don’t necessarily think about Resistance. We don’t fully understand it or even worse, realize it’s there planning and scheming your next downfall.
We just think, “I’ll start working on my content but first I better straighten out my desk … or get my to-do lists in order” or we get distracted by something on Facebook, or we feel that we have to check our email, or we need to just not be hard on yourself and just watch an episode of our favorite Netflix show.
The best way to combat this by realizing that you are facing Resistance. Once you become more aware of its devious tactics, you can fight it, and ultimately overcome its web of procrastination.
It can be difficult in the beginning, but the key is to focus on it for a couple of days. Write on post it notes the words “Defeat Resistance” and put it somewhere visible as you work. That will help remind you to be aware of its menacing methods.
And every time you do something that isn’t the most important thing you could be doing right now, be aware of what you’re doing and shift your focus. It’s through these small acts of awareness will you be able to beat resistance one day at a time.
2. Become a pro.
The professional, unlike the amateur, comes to work ready to work. He’s doing it for a living (and loves what he does) and knows that as long as he shows up and starts working, the rest will come. If you approach the work like a pro, and you’ll get the work done.
So how does a pro get work done? They are clear and focused.
Before a pro starts the day, they are very clear about what they want to accomplish. They know they won’t be able to finish 10 major projects, but maybe they can finish at least one important project, or at least move it along to a certain point.
A way to help you turn pro is to get clear on the three most important tasks you wish to accomplish today. Once you have those tasks defined, then you have to focus on them until completion or til you reached your milestone.
Focus and finish these important tasks first. Then move on to the smaller tasks you need to complete today. If you find yourself being lured to do something that’s not on that short list of three things, bring yourself back and focus.
3. Clear away all distractions
Don’t spend a lot of time on this, because eliminating distractions can be a distraction itself.
Instead, take one minute: close your email, log out of facebook, and turn off all notifications on your phone.
Close all programs except the one you need to do the important task in front of you. Clear your desk quickly and put on some headphones so you’re not to be disturbed for the next hour or so.
And if you work from home and have people around you, let them know you are entering your cave of creativity and not to disturb you. And if you have your own home office, put a do not disturb sign outside your door.
Then get to work.
4. Show up consistently
The more structure you give yourself throughout your day, the harder it will be for resistance to enter through the cracks.
Decide what time of the day you can be the most productive. Are you an early riser? A night owl? Work with a schedule that aligns with your lifestyle. And once you set it, be relentless about showing up.
Once you know when you’re working, decide where. Do you like working from home? Sitting at a coffee shop? Are you most productive in an office? Or all the above? Decide the place and time you are working in advance so all you have to do is show up.
When are able to plan and alleviate daily choices will you be more successful at overcoming resistance.
